Over the last two weeks, Year 3 have been focusing on Roger McGough the poet. We have been looking at his poetry book called 'poetry pie'. We looked at various different poems and even had the opportunity to perform some. We performed 'School for Ghouls'. We focused on the meaning of the words and the expression we used when performing. We went outside and used one of the tents as our performance space!.
On Wednesday 24th June, Year 3 had a European day! This day involved the children visiting different European countries and experience native clothing, food and games. We started off our afternoon by learning a traditional Spanish dance called Flamenco dancing. We had to clap and stamp with the rhythm. We then visited different countries. We had homemade Albanian Pite, which is a pastry tart with cheese and onions. We also tried a homemade Albanian cake too! In Poland, we sampled some sausages, pickles and pretzel sticks. We tried various foods from all over Europe such as, croissants, madeleines, cheese, parma ham, chorizo, biscotti, crackers, Welsh cakes, cheese pretzels, and beef stroganoff! Along with the food, we also learned different facts about these countries. To finish off the day, we all watched the England Euro 2020 highlights. We cheered for England and sang it's coming home! We discussed what the Euros were and how important it is to each country and how we celebrate different countries coming together for football.
We all had a fabulous day and we learned lots! A huge thank you to all parents who donated food and objects to help with our day. We could not have done it without you!

In Maths this week, Year 3 have been learning all about money. We started off our topic by becoming familiar with the different coins and different ways we can make the same amounts. We continued and developed our learning throughout the week, where we started to convert pounds to pence. We ended the week by adding amounts of money without regrouping. This tested our mental addition and our resilience. We used the money to help us understand the concept more.
In Science this week, we were learning all about shadows. We learnt new vocabulary:
-opaque
-transparent
-translucent
We found out that shadows are formed when an opaque object blocks the light source. To enhance our learning more, we created shadow monsters outside with our group. We had different challenges each time- we even had to make a shadows monster with no legs!
We also set up a stick outside Pear class to monitor and closely observe how the shadows moved throughout the day.
On Friday, we all experienced a Roman Day! This day was filled with lots of different activities all relating to Romans. In the morning, we had a carousel of activities in our groups. The different stations were:
After these activities, Miss Whitfield led the children to sing 2 different Roman songs.
After lunch, we had a quiz. We were split into different teams and had to think of a quiz name! There were 3 rounds to the quiz- all relating to our knowledge we learnt in the day!
Next, we sat on the floor in a circle (how they ate at banquets) and got to try some foods the Romans had. We could try:
Finally, we were treated to a real life gladiator fight between Mrs Chapman and Mr Steedman. The girls were told they had to sit at the back just like they were in the Roman time. The boys got to sit at the front! We all chanted for Mrs Chapman to win, and she did!
We all had a brilliant day!
Our current Science topic is all about light. For this lesson, we were learning what reflection is and how important it can be to keep us safe. We worked in pairs and discussed that reflection is where light bounces off reflective materials. We also found out that light can be absorbed by dark materials. After this, we then worked collaboratively and produced a 'Be Bright Be Seen' poster. We had a checklist of certain items we had to include! We then had to present all this information to the class!
We have kicked off this term's English with The Iron Man! For our first lesson, we were only shown the front cover. We had to become book detectives and think carefully about what clues were given to us. We worked in groups to find out what we knew already. We found out that The Iron Man is colossal, we knew this because there is a young boy, who looks tiny, perching on the Iron Man's shoulder. We also found out that the Iron Man has eyes that glow! Some of us made predictions about what the Iron Man could be like or who the young man could be.
For the next part of the lesson, we collected and studied lots of vocabulary relating to the Iron Man. We looked as different properties of metals, such as, temperature, texture, colour and types of metals. We each had different items which were made out of metal which helped us think of great descriptions we could use for the Iron Man!
We can't wait to learn more about the Iron Man!
In this lesson, we wanted to find out if Bronze age people had religion or believed in God. We found out about the Stonehenge and what people thought it was used for. We found out that a lot of archaeologists believed it was used for religious purposes. They also thought it could be used for a burial site.
We then created a replica of the Stonehenge using lego, mutli link cubes and playdough. We made sure we included the features such as the altar, the heel stone and Outer Circle of Sarsen stones.
Continuing our art this week, we used all of our skills and created our own cave drawing using charcoal. We used the techniques that we learned last week and applied them to our drawings. We were completely free to design our own piece of art. We were even told that there was no right ro wrong answer! The children started by shading their background which provided a strong background for them to work on. Each child chose an animal to draw using the 2D shapes method they got taught. Some of the children even used handprints!

In Art, we have been looking at prehistoric art. We have been building on our existing drawing skills from previous units and have applied these in our drawings. We drew 2 different owls- one in pencil and one in charcoal. The first drawing we did was our initial sketch which saw us examining the image we were drawing from- looking at the 2D shapes we got from it. We know that everything is made from 2D shapes and when you focus on those when drawing, it is a lot easier!
We then moved on to our second drawing of our owl. This time we had to scale up our drawing onto large paper. We also used charcoal which is burnt wood. This can create lots of great effects- especially the smudging technique. We focused on using different tones in our drawings to make them 'come alive'.
We then displayed all of our owls outside of our group room so we can see them and remind ourselves of how far we have come in our art skills!
We are a;ao impressed with the home learners who joined us with this lesson. Children at home got to choose what media they wanted to draw their owl with. Some children used pencils while some chose to use chalk. We are very impressed with all of the children's attitude to art. What great artists we are all becoming!
In Maths, we have been learning different types of angles. We have stretched ourselves into finding angles in shapes using geo boards.
The children at home have also been learning about different angles and have been using JamBoard to draw their angles and find different size angles.
