  • Dream Catcher 23.1.2020 Jordan Murray

    Published 23/01/20

On Thursday 23rd January, we were visited by Jordan Murray for a Dream Catcher assembly.

Jordan is 31 years old and works at Airbus in Stevenage.  He is an engineer. He is from North Manchester and went to school there which was called Chester Primary. As a child, his dream was to be an Astronaut but he was scared of heights.

Airbus builds satellites which orbit earth. Some satellites can travel very, very fast. Their largest satellite weighs a lot and is as big as a Double Decker bus. He has been working there for nine years. He works 8-10 hours a day (most days). To get this job he had to get a degree in Maths, Science and Physics.

His nugget of wisdom for us was to do things you like doing – you will be more successful if you do a job which you enjoy.

  • Year 4 Rapid Fire Cricket

    Published 19/01/20

Two teams made up of Year 4 pupils took part in the Stevenage Sporting Futures Key Stage 2 Rapid Fire Cricket competition at Nobel School. Playing against some well drilled sides, the children quickly adapted to the rules of the competition and worked really well in their teams to master the tactics of the game.  Despite winning a couple of matches each the teams played each other for the minor positions in the competition, but nevertheless performed with great commitment and determination as well as excellent teamwork. Well done to all.

  • Dream Catcher 16th January Nick Gill

    Published 18/01/20

On Thursday 16th January 2020, we were visited by Nick Gill who is an editor from the Comet newspaper.

Nick was born at the Lister hospital and was raised in Stevenage. He went to school at Long Meadow school where he liked coming up with stories to tell and loved reading books. Nick’s favourite book growing up was ‘Holes’ by Lewis Sachar. When he was younger, he actually dreamed of being a journalist and after going to university and going to a special journalist school, he made his dreams come true.

Nick started off as a reporter about 10 years ago where he continued working for about 3-4 years. He then became a chief reporter for around 3 years and climbed the ranks to become an editor. Nick’s job is to travel around Stevenage to look for stories to tell in the newspapers and on the Comet’s website. Working for the newspaper has given Nick many opportunities such as meeting the queen, visiting different countries and seeing the Olympic torch.

Nick’s nugget of wisdom for us is ‘to always try and find things that you like to do - it will help you succeed.'

  • Dream Catcher 9.1.2020 - Helen Bailey

    Published 09/01/20

On Thursday 9th January, we were visited by Helen Bailey.

Helen  lives in East London and loves designing fashion. She is a STEM school project administrator but in the past she has had many exciting jobs.

In year 12, she studied business on a type writer and short-hand handwriting but soon decided that this wasn’t what she wanted to do. Then she studied being a secretary. When she went to college, she studied a four year degree in art as designing dresses would require her to be good at drawing. In her third year, she worked for a fashion designer called Helen Storey who had her own design shop. There she was encouraged to share her ideas and create.

They did a project on Dvora cloths and printed a dress with cement (which stayed in a glass container outside for two weeks and cleaned the air inside it). Finally she finished her degree and worked in many bridal wear shops since. Then for a while, she had her own bridal shop.

Her nugget of wisdom was, “Remember that your education is always important. Everything you learn is important to remember as it will help you make decisions about what you do and don’t want to do later on in life.”

  • Dream Catcher 5.12.19 Roy Caine

    Published 08/12/19

On Thursday 5th December, we were visited by Mr Roy Cain who is a storyteller.

Roy goes around to schools reading stories to children and making them smile. He lives in Hertfordshire with four sons and a wife and he came to our school to read the Donkey’s First Christmas written by an eleven year old girl. This book was about Mary, Jesus and Bethlehem but from the donkey’s point of view. This book was very entertaining and humorous and we would love to have him come back to Roebuck Academy and read more stories.

Being a storyteller wasn’t his only dream as a little boy. Roy wanted to be a teacher growing up so he studied singing, dancing and script writing which he enjoyed and he now has a passion for storytelling.

Roy’s nugget of wisdom for our children was enjoy your school, enjoy books, and enjoy life.

  • Dream Catcher 28.11.19 - Owen Stephen

    Published 08/12/19

On Thursday 28th November, we had a very talented man called Owen came in for a dream catcher assembly.

Owen is a musician and has been all around the world. Just recently, he came back from a cruise in Australia singing for all the people on board. He was due to go to Denmark the following weekend and then Los Angeles before Christmas for another cruise. He is very, very busy!

Owen told us that he always wanted to be a football reporter/ analyst when he was younger as he enjoyed football but didn't feel he was that good at playing it. When he was older, in his late teens,he taught himself to play guitar by watching You Tube videos. Because he loved playing so much, he played all of the time and quickly became very good at it.

Over the years, he has played at many gigs locally and he has visited over 60 countries. He has also been a music teacher. Owen sang us a song called Shot Gun which everybody enjoyed singing along to.

Owen told us that we should pursue what we like doing as in his case, his hobby has turned into his job which he absolutely loves doing every single day. We are all hoping that Owen comes back and visits us again soon as we really enjoyed his assembly!
