School Council

At Roebuck Academy we actively promote opportunities for our children to participate in leadership opportunities and experiences.  One of the most effective ways to achieve this is through participation in the School Council. Children love being a member of the School council, learning and developing valuable skills such as teamwork, organisational and communication skills that they need to develop for adulthood.

We believe that providing children with key roles of responsibility is paramount to their development and learning experience.

Our School Council is a well-respected body within the school and consists of children from all year groups. At the start of the new school year in September the children democratically elect one pupil from each class to join the school council and  represent their view points as a class.

Our School Council meet regularly to discuss topics, issues and initiatives that affect them and their learning. Actions from each meeting are shared with the rest of the school on a regular basis.  Children relish the opportunity to become a greater part of school life and enjoy making a difference to their school.

The children consider whole school issues and discuss them in class, which then feeds back into the School Council.  They also share ideas and decisions from School Council meetings with their class. Decisions made within School Council can, and do, have a real impact on the rest of the school. This year some of the issues we have looked/been involved with are –

  • developing curriculum intent and implementation.
  • put forward ideas for new playground zones on the playground.
  • organising events such as odd socks day, children in need etc
  • the development of a local playground with Stevenage Borough Council.
  • the development of themed weeks such as well-being, music week etc
  • home learning.

The School Council is overseen by Mrs Hnatiuk (PSHE lead)
