Wow! Year 4 have been super busy over the last few weeks. We have taken part in sports week, sports day, Science Day, MasterChef and so much more! The children all showed great teamwork and resilience when working together and all had fun whilst doing so!

For Science day, we made catapults and looked at different objects to see which would make the best flying golden snitch!

This week Year 4 have started their new Literacy topic. To begin with we have carried out lots of research on the digestive system and recreated the process by using food, orange juice to represent stomach acid, a plastic bag to represent the stomach, tights for the small intestine and a cup with an opening for the large intestine! As you can imagine, things got pretty gross! What a fun hands on Literacy lesson we had! The last couple of weeks have been very busy in year 4 with trips to a botanical garden and VE Day celebrations!

We launched our new Science topic called 'Human Impact' with an enquiry into pollution around our school. We carried out a litter pick and analysed the results. We found out that the most common waste was plastic, with lots of this coming from wrappers from break-time snacks. We discussed next steps that could help with this and created posters to remind everyone about the steps that we need to take to reduce this. In Maths, we have enjoyed using our knowledge of measures for length, mass and volume to convert and compare measurements and solve problems. In Literacy, we have enjoyed designing hybrid characters and settings for our narrative writing based on the animation "The Lost Thing" and are looking forward to using these ideas in our next independent write.

To finish off our DT project, year 4 created the housing of their torches that their adults helped them to create. Children used different materials and thought about the design specifications to ensure they created a fully functional torch with a simple circuit. We are certain we have lots of electricians on our hands! Great work Year 4!

Year 4 would like to say a big THANK YOU to all the adults that joined us to help finish off our torches for our D&T unit. We created electrical circuits and switches to create a sim0le circuit. We then constructed a case for our torch out of plastic bottles and tin foil. We had a wonderful morning working together!

To celebrate National Story Telling week, we based our literacy learning on the book 'Journey'. We took part in a range of activities including role play, drawing illustrations, writing paragraphs and publishing. We then shared our work with Year 1 children, who were also exploring the same text. We loved spending time with the younger children!

  • Amazing Ancient Egyptians in Year 4.

    Published 01/02/25, by Andy Mari

What a busy week Year 4 have had! On Monday, the children immersed themselves in a history workshop. They created different arts and crafts, dances, role plays and much more! The children learnt about key historical figures and busted some myths around this time period.

Later on in the week, they took part in another workshop focusing on their mental well-being and how healthy foods and exercise can help this.

We immersed ourselves in ancient history in our recent Amazing Ancient Egyptians Workshop. We were invited to wear Ancient Egyptian-style clothing and became citizens of Ancient Egypt for the day. The morning was full of engaging activities, such as writing with inks on papyrus using hieroglyphics, sculpting canopic jars which were used in the process of mummification and even creating ancient Egyptian perfumes consisting of a ball of wax infused with fragrant herbs which was placed on the head to melt in the sun. We ended our day with a lavish feast and performances of dances and plays depicting Ancient Egyptian stories. We are looking forward to our Geography learning about the River Nile which will lead on perfectly from this!

What a wonderful start to 2025 we have had in year 4! Rowan class have dived straight into their swimming for the term and have impressed the teachers with their attitude to trying a new challenge! In science this week, we looked at how sound travels and answered the big question; does sound travel through solids? We created our own ear bongs to help us answer the question. And we concluded the answer is YES! Sound does travel through solids.

Over the last few weeks, year 4 have been very busy with lots of different activities going on. We took part in a fun Children In Need morning where David Lyon came and delivered a fitness session. We had a great time burning lots of energy and having fun with our friends, all for a wonderful charity. Thank you adults for your contributions!

In PSHE, we have continued our learning in our unit of 'celebrating differences'. We made clear classes to help us see clearly and not make assumptions or prejudgements about people just by how they look.

We are very much looking forward to the festive fun in the next few weeks!

We have had a lovely start to the second half of the Autumn Term in Year 4. In maths, we have been developing our understanding and recall of multiplication and division and have been putting the manipulatives to good use to check and prove our ideas when solving problems. In PSHE we have been celebrating our differences and used the story 'Along Came a Different' to inspire a celebrating difference poster activity. We acknowledged anti-bullying week with a live assembly and activities and of course, wearing 'odd socks' along with the rest of the school. We also created mixed media silhouette artwork as part of our activities in recognition of Remembrance Day.
