Last week we all tried really hard in our mock SATS, thank you to all the staff who attended mingle with your mentor! In Science we have been learning all about our circulation system. We have been exploring the different parts of the human heart and even took part in a dissection of lamb heart. In Literacy we have started a new text, Thornhill, which used incredible illustrations and diary entries to narrate its story. In DT we have been using computer programme Tinkercad to create 3D playgrounds and prototypes of our structures.

We have enjoyed learning about the life of local legend Lewis Hamilton. We have been writing a biography about his life. In Science we have been learning about our circulation system, we created our own blood bags and learned about the different components that make up our blood. We celebrated World book day, it was lovely to have the opportunity to dress up as our favourite characters, share stories with other year groups and take part in the footy and books quiz. In Maths we have been exploring volume, using practical resources to help us with our understanding. In History, we have been using a local census to learn about the past of our local area. We have explored a variety of sources and understand how they can help us to find out about the past. We also had a great time learning our songs for the KS2 music festival!

We have continued to work hard on Maths, developing our understanding of percentage and ratio. We have been using the CPA approach to understand this and we have tried to show our working in many ways! In Science, we conducted our own experiment to explore how shadows change. We collected data and presented it by using a line graph. In PE, we have been developing our hockey skills, learning how to control the ball and pass. In Art, we have developed our own photocollages using newspaper cut-outs and city scapes using pictures of everyday objects.

We have had a fabulous start back, including a martial arts workshop. We hosted our fantastic finish, where we showed off our waistcoats we made on our catwalk. We also used this opportunity to showcase some of our work from the last term.

We have also been exploring light and shadows in Science. We have used different resources to explore what shadows are and worked together to conduct an experiment around this! In reading comprehension, we read the poem 'The Fog' and used drama to explore what life would be like if we could not see.

We have been exploring persuasive writing and used Great Thunberg's climate speech as inspiration! We are working towards creating our own piece of persuasive writing, using specific language features. In Maths we have been exploring decimal numbers, using a variety of concrete, pictorial and abstract sources to support our understanding. We have continued to learn about World War 2, which has included studying different historical sources. The Christmas festivities have begun, we enjoyed the pantomime and singing at St Peter's Church!

We were visited by Barclays Bank and had the opportunity to visit the Barclays van. We learnt about saving and investing our money. In history, we are loving learning about World War 2. We have been studying different sources to infer about what life was like, also learning about key events such as The Blitz and The Battle of Britain. This has helped us to write a recount in writing, based on what life was like during this time. In music, we have been producing our own 'hip hop beats' using Yustudio.

We took part in a rowing workshop and tackled some challenges. We learnt the basic skills of rowing, and it was great to see the progress made in such a short time. In Literacy, we completed a horror narrative and some of us even performed this during our 'Fright Night' event. We are also enjoying our new topic 'World War' and welcomed Martin Impey into school to talk to us about his graphic novel 'The Blitz'. We took part in Remembrance Day activities and created our own art based on poppies.

In Science we have been exploring different living organisms. We created our own experiments, which allowed us to investigate how mould grows on bread. We have also been working together to create our own branching keys. In Literacy, we have been reading 'A Monster Calls' and we used role play to reenact nightmares. This inspired us to think about different feelings we have during our dreams and allowed us to generate exciting vocabulary. We are very excited to share our own horror narratives with our parents/carers on Fright Night!

We started off by exploring the work of a James Mayhew in Literacy, and we used this to inspire our own setting descriptions and also studied the work of Monet. We enjoyed a fantastic assembly where we actually met James Mayhew and took part in his workshop. In Maths, we have been exploring numbers up to 10 million, using different resources to represent this. In Science, we have used our prior knowledge of different living things to classify them into groups.

What a final few weeks Year 6 have had at Primary School! The production was incredible! The children were an absolute asset to you all. Some very talented individuals who we would not be surprised to see on the big stage one day. We put on three shows in total: one for the school as a dress rehearsal and two after-school performances for the adults. Some of the comments we heard were 'worthy of The West End' and 'I couldn't believe how good it was'. As staff, we were immensely proud of them all for their hard work and talents. We had a trip to The Three Horshoes bowls club at Shephallbury Park where we enjoyed using real woods to hit the small 'jack' and even cheered on the teaching staff as they had a go. Lastly, as an end-of-year treat the Year 6s had a water gun fight. The children had a lovely time and got very wet. However, as an extra surprise, using the remainder of the Enterprise money that the children raised from the Summer Fete, the staff organised an Ice Cream Van to arrive during the water fight and supply each chip with an ice cream or ice lolly. What a way to end the week. With the last two days to come (which I'm sure will be full of hugs and tears) the children are looking forward to the end of a special year and their graduation ceremony. Well done Year 6. What an awesome journey!

Recently, in Year 6, we had a Harry Potter-themed Science Day. We had fun making working wands that used two colours (one that had to be our house colour: Phoenix red, Gryphon yellow, Dragon green, and Pegasus blue) and another which was our battle colour. The wand had to be lightweight, and we had lots of different equipment to choose from to make it. First, we had to make our circuit, before making our wand casing to go around it. We also had a sports week, where we took part in a variety of different activities: in boxing we learnt to protect our face and how to punch; in basketball we played a game called ‘The Giant is Sleepy’ where the aim of the game was to bounce the ball up to a coin (represented by a yellow cone) and then try to steal it. Then the giant chased the person who had the coin; in frisbee we played matches and were also challenged to use a mini frisbee as well as a normal sized frisbee. After Sports Week, we had our own Sports Day. We did many activities. The most popular one was the game with a sponge, and our teachers tried to spray us with water, and we had to fill up our bucket using the sponge. There were also races and a parent and teacher obstacle course.

Recently, in Year 6, we have been focusing on our writing since returning from half-term. The first text we looked at was dialogue between two main characters called Theo and Lana. We had to be creative and use our own ideas to think of what was happening in the story as it was in French. Afterwards, we planned the story for our Independent Writing; we then got to see the story with English subtitles to see what the characters were saying. In history, we have been learning about the Mayas and what things they do for entertainment. We experienced this by sacrificing someone in the class to be a victim by buying them (with red beans). We then put blue face paint on the victim and pretended to take their organs out. This is an example of what they would do for entertainment in the Maya civilisation. Every Tuesday, we will be practising for our production, (The Wizard of Oz) by learning a dance from an outside dance coach who has choreographed some routines for us. Also, this half-term, on Wednesdays, we will be learning how to play a sport called bowls. The aim of bowls is to roll a ball very low on the floor and trying to get your bowl closer to the jack. Finally, in Science, we have been learning about reflection and how we can use a torch to measure the angle of reflection off a mirror, how shadows can appear larger and smaller by altering the light source from an object and items that are transparent and opaque.

In maths, we have been focusing on money, algebra, 3D shapes and many more. In guided reading, all 4 groups have been focusing on 2 texts called Raiders' Peril and The Amazing Octopus. We have been answering different styles of questions to help us get used to the questions we might be asked. In PE, we have been doing cricket and trying different techniques on how to bowl and how to aim. In history, we have been learning about the Mayas. We have drawn Maya symbols and even had a go at making a Mayan calendar.

One investigation was to dissect a lamb’s heart. We used a pair of gloves and some straws to help us identify the blood vessels. We then used a scalpel to cut down the middle of the lamb’s heart to explore the inside of the left and the right atrium. It was very interesting to see what a real lamb's heart looks like. We also made 'blood soup' using cheerios, juice, marshmallows and rice as the red and white blood cells, platelets and plasma to show what blood is made of. In literacy this half term we have been reading a book called Thornhill which was about a mysterious girl and an abandoned house. We then used this to link into our independent writing based a video called Alma. It has been a very busy half term with Mock SATs but they have helped us to feel prepared for our real tests in the summer.

We have also begun to look at nets of different 3D shapes. In literacy, we have been finishing our independent writing about Mount Everest. We typed our reports on the Chromebook and researched the sections we wanted to include. We have started a new unit based on a poem called The Dreadful Menace, which was used as part of the advertisement for the Winter Olympics 2014. Additionally, in DT, we are planning how we would like our parks to look. Some of the designs might be used later in our school to improve the playground and make it more fun for the children. In computing, we have been coding games like Pac-man or Mario. We then got other people around the class to play our game and test them out.

We have been describing Mount Everest using powerful vocabulary and fascinating facts. For example, did you know that the Himalayas 30 peaks tower over 24,000 feet. In maths, we have started a new unit which is Area and Perimeter. We have been trying to find out how to find perimeters in different shapes and using a formula (L x W) to find the answer for the area . In P.E we are doing ultimate frisbee and doing matches. On Thursday afternoon, the University of Hertfordshire came to our school this week and taught us a dance and a song that we have been practicing ready for a performance on Friday 7th March. Each class in Year 3 through to Year 6 performed the dances to everyone that we had learnt. They were based on the Wonders of the world. In Year 6 we learnt a song about Christ The Redeemer.

In Geography we are learning about the UK and the English counties and where they are located using an atlas.

For example, a persuasive speech about why we should be getting more sleep in the mornings, why Golden Time should be re-introduced and why school holidays should be longer. We also went to the library to help us focus on our learning as we were typing our speeches on the computers. In maths, we have moved on to our new unit which is ratio. We have been learning to compare numbers using ratio, dividing and multiplying ratio and converting ratio numbers into percentages and decimals. In music, we finished our unit with ukuleles so we tried playing some new songs using the chords we had learnt. To celebrate Storytelling Week, we created a storyboard around the book Journey by Aaron Becker. We then wrote our own setting description based on one of the images in the book. These we shared with some of the Year 3 as part of a storyboard around sharing session.

We did this because our new unit is about Classification (which is to do with sorting animals and plants out using questions).

In PE, we have been doing badminton (using the forehand grip, backhand grip, and thumb grip) as well as taking part in a boxing workshop where we have been doing skipping and pad work.

In literacy, we have started a new unit based on a book called Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. The book is about an 11-year-old boy called Michael. His family are sailing around the world when they get lost in a storm. Michael and the dog (Stella) end up overboard. We are going to start our Independent Writing next week and will be continuing the story with our own ideas. Also, we began art this term and have been copying Maya drawings (Maya was before the Egyptians in history.) On Thursday 16th January, we had Barclays Bank come to us and explain about keeping safe with money, how to budget and had a tour of a mobile Barclays banking van.

There are 3 people we could choose from: Emmeline Pankhurst, Malala Yousafzai and Anne Frank. In maths, we are on a new unit, which is fractions. During this unit, we convert fractions to add and subtract them. In PE, we have been finalising our archery skills and counting up all our points as it’s our last week doing archery. In history, we have been learning about feminism and what the rules were for women a long time ago. In our music lessons, we have been learning how to play the ukulele, what strings to play and sing the song we have been learning ready to share with parents.

In literacy, since it was Remembrance Day, we were writing a remembrance poem as we watched a video explaining how important Remembrance Day is and what the soldiers did for us. Also, in literacy, we finished our independent write for the Graveyard Book so we could perform our stories for Fright Night. Since then, we have been focusing on David Attenborough and writing a biography based on his achievements.

The people who we have been focusing on are Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson. They were American mathematicians who faced many barriers but didn’t give up . In DT lessons, we have been preparing to make our own waistcoats but in the style of WW2 and our unit is called Make do and Mend. We have been writing stories in literacy and have been starting to write our independent write to share to our parents at Fright Night! We have also been doing a new unit in maths which is about common multiples and have just finished our division unit. On a Friday afternoon, we do Science and we have been learning about evolution. Charles Darwin explained that over hundreds of years birds have developed to be able to eat different types of seeds to survive longer. This is called natural selection. We did a little investigation in class to understand this more.

In our P.E. lessons this half term, we have been working on basketball but particularly matches and focusing on passes. Also, in the afternoons, in science we have been learning about evolution and Charles Darwin. In history, we are learning about WW2 and most of the lands in the UK were being bombed.

It’s great to see so many students settling in brilliantly, embracing their new roles as the eldest children in the school with such respect and enthusiasm. A remarkable number of children have thrown their hats in the ring for Head Boy/Girl and to be part of the DREAM Team, demonstrating not only ambition but also courage to step into leadership positions.

This week, we’ve also enriched our learning through extensive collaborative activities. Whether working in pairs or larger groups, the children have exhibited exceptional teamwork. Mr Alden and Mrs Longhurst couldn’t be more pleased with their effort and the high expectations they’ve already set for themselves – it’s truly commendable! Keep up the fantastic work, Year 6!

Auditions were held in Ash Class after lunch and our parts were announced before we broke up for the half-term holiday. We have begun our enterprise unit in maths this week - looking at profit, loss and budgeting. We were arranged into groups and had to consider our group name, logo and what products we would sell. We planned using '2connect' in Purple Mash which helps us to plan a mind map. In the upcoming week, we shall be doing our exams commonly referred to as SAT’s. To do revision, we split the classes into groups, so we could focus on specific areas. In art, we compared Van Gogh to Adam Lister using Lister's pixelated art. During SPaG, we played a quiz in teams to answer grammar questions. In Science, we looked at reflection and refraction and used water and a glass to see how the glass and water can alter an image.

For one of our topic lessons, we sacrificed a member of the class to recreate a Maya ceremony. First we paid for our victim with red beans. Then, we held their arms and painted their face blue before pinning them down on the alter to perform the ritual. Once the sacrifice had been completed we had a go at writing up this process in a first person recount.

We focused on using artefacts to inform us of how they lived and what they believed in. We studied King Pakal's death mask and asked questions. In addition, we also studied how the Maya communicated. We found out that they wrote using their own hieroglyphs and created their own books called codices. We crated our own using well-known Maya symbols. After this, we then looked in-depth at their hierarchy system. We discussed what life was like for rich or poor members of Maya society. Next week, watch out- a member of Year 6 will be sacrificed! Who will it be? Only the high priest will decide!

We used PVA and glue guns to secure our designs to the base.
Also, to end this term, we started learning about algebra. We looked at what an expression was and how to work out the rules of sequences. During our English unit we learnt about a poem used for the Winter Olympics called The Dreadful Menace. We looked at the poetic devices used and the powerful vocabulary that the author chose. We started off by following some choices to navigate through a story. We are soon going to be designing our own chosen story. We started a new Science unit this week which is about the circulatory system and we learnt about how the blood pumps around the body to our organs.

We saw many animals of different kinds: rhinos, elephants and loads more animals. We have started a new geography unit which is all about the UK and Northern Ireland and have started learning about counties. During a Dreamcatcher assembly, people from Axis Communications came in to show us their presentation about Martin Gren (the founder), about what their cameras were for and we saw a live feed from a camera in Sweden! We have started using spreadsheets in our new computing unit for calculations. For art we are doing Still Life which is the art of drawing inanimate objects in 3-D.You may know some of the artists we studied: Andy Warhol, Caravaggio and Jean Siméon Chardin. We started the unit by locating the countries and some of the main cities using atlases. We have also had our first Dream Catcher assembly of the new year and were visited by Axis, who came in and did a presentation about Martin Gren and about what their cameras were for. We even saw a live feed from a train station camera in Sweden! In Art, we have begun a unit about Still Life. In computing, we began using spreadsheets to look at calculations. Our focus text this half-term in Literacy is Kensuke's Kingdom. We read the first chapter and did some freeze frames before starting our sentence writing focusing on language to describe the sea.

We have looked at some facts about his life, animals and plants that he has discovered and places he has visited. We are using our sentence stacking lessons to build our own biographies for this national treasure. In music, we put the finishing touches to our performance piece ‘Don’t Stop Believing’ by Journey, where we sang and performed using ukuleles. Also, this half-term we have sat our end of term tests (how mean): completing arithmetic tests which we have been practising as part of our early morning work. We have also been creating some fantastic art inspired by Henry Fraser. We shared some of our work with him on X (formerly known as Twitter) and we even got a response from him!

On this day we all dressed in yellow for children in need. We made money for charity by doing a burpee challenge. The year sixes helped group count each year group and all the children got a high five from Pudsey!

in literacy, after plotting our own ideas based on the story of Rose Blanche, we started to plan our own version of the ending. We were given a starting plot point, and then generated the rest of the plot.

Each year group had a visitor who came in to talk about equality. Year 6 was taught about: LGBTQIA+ and race. We took part in debates with the visitor, and tried to prove our points. We discussed a book called Tango makes 3 and debated about why the book was banned in some countries. We also debated whether Harry Kane should've worn the LGBTQIA+ band in the World Cup set in Qatar, that he was forbidden to wear because of their laws.

After we had dinner, we went back to the rooms for a while and then started our evening activities. After that, we all went to our rooms and got ready for the night. The next day we all met at the meeting point and started our activities. Some of the activities we did were: giant swing, rock climbing, abseiling, sensory trail, aeroball, trapeze, vertical challenge and rifle shooting. My favourite was definitely the giant swing because it shocked me because he told us it was a safety rope, and it was actually the rope that let us down.

Last week, we focused on different art techniques called Photomontage. This week, we became photographers! We specifically focused on a style called ‘macro photography’. This is a type of skill where we ‘zoomed’ into our object we were capturing. We had to think carefully about the background of our object as well as choosing the correct setting on the camera. Next week we will be using the images we photographed to edit and manipulate to create our own artwork.

In particular, we have had a very busy few weeks in Science. We've dissected hearts in to understand the structure of the chambers in closer detail. We've made blood soup using Cheerios and juice to show how it is made up of different parts. Year 5 and Six we're invited to take part in a zoom call all about birds of prey where we learnt about the food they eat, their hearing, an their eyesight along with other fascinating facts. Finally, as part of a whole school investigation, we conducted tests to see whether a more expensive biscuit was a better dunker to a cheaper one. Another key focus from this week was our music performance as a whole Key Stage. We learnt an original songs written by University students and had the chance to perform these for the rest of the Key Stage. Most recently, we have been analysing a poem that was used for the 2014 Winter Olympics campaign titled 'The Dreadful Menace'. We have enjoyed looking at the use of personification and creating our own ideas to construct a collaborative group poem all about winter.

We had our Holocaust workshop with two amazing teachers from Thomas Alleynes- who taught us the history of the Holocaust and what happened during the horrifying event. We learned over 6 million Jews were killed due to their religion, race & beliefs.

We have started a new unit in literacy on persuasive speeches- mainly learning about Greta Thunberg and how she has the passion to try and save our beautiful world. In addition, we are currently making posters about the topic Greta was trying to explain- Climate Change. A challenge is currently making its way around the school: we have been challenged by Mrs Young to draw a realistic tiger for last year’s astrological animal for the Chinese New Year, the tiger (a symbol of dignity, ferocity, sternness and energy). Another piece of art we have begun is titled ‘The Great Wave’, where we will be using cross-hatching to fill our designs.

Finally, in maths, we have been learning about the nets of cubes, 3d shapes and their properties and working extremely hard on our arithmetic scores. At Roebuck we are…

We started our new literacy unit based on Michael Morpurgo's Kensuke's Kingdom. We have already had our first long writing task to describe the storm using personification and onomatopoeia. To support us in this, we created our own soundscape of a thunderstorm using body percussion (check out a video we posted on our Twitter page). We have also begun our new science unit looking at classification: what classification is using a game of class Guess Who; and why we classify. We are also looking forward to our music unit and learning to play the ukulele.

Of course, Monday was a snow day - and because of this we had time at school to enjoy the winter-wonderland outside! We had an extremely exciting lesson about dog breeds, where we matched dogs to their best descriptions and wrote definitions of breeds and their personalities as part of our science unit about inherited and acquired characteristics. In addition, we had a lesson drawing the Mr Men and Little Miss’s children and their genetic inheritances. In English, each child wrote autobiographies on the Chromebooks! We also had many tests to stretch our brains even further and to see the wonderful progress we have been making so far this year. Finally, we enjoyed our last Friday before the end of term with a non-school uniform day and an exciting class party with games, drinks and food to our hearts content! What a perfect way to end the year.

Last Friday, we took part in a Boxing Workshop where we learnt how to dodge, block and attack! We learnt to work against each other and found out what boxers do! We were also joined by the Maynard Ensemble, who taught us about the WoodWind instruments that the group that had brought with them: they told us about their instruments, played some songs and even tricked us into clapping on one of them - making us think that the song was finished when it wasn’t (they managed to do this three times before the song ended). In Literacy, we have moved onto a Biography unit. We are currently writing a Biography on David Attenborough and what he has done throughout his life up until now. After we have completed this we are planning to write an independent piece on a choice of three famous individuals.
