In Year 3 we have started a new maths topic of time. So far, we have looked at AM and PM times, telling the time to the minute, and we have explored both a 12-hour and 24-hour clock. In Literacy, we continued our newspaper report topic by planning and writing a report about zoo animals that visited Roebuck. We ended our DT topic this week with a brilliant Fantastic Finish. Thank you so much to everyone who came and helped us to finish our cushions, they look amazing!

We started our new geography topic of volcanoes by looking at the different layers of the Earth. We made our own Earth models with plasticine making sure you could clearly see the different layers. In maths, we have been exploring money. We have worked hard to calculate totals and change. To celebrate World Book Day, we created our own reading rivers showing the journey of our love of books. We ended the week with a special visit from the ducklings.

Over the past 2 weeks, Year 3 have been working together to create an inclusive garden in small groups. We listened carefully to each other and planned out what we would include. We have also finished our art topic by creating our very own flowers. We thought carefully about the different shapes, patterns and textures. In Literacy, we have been looking at, and writing our own haiku poems.

Last week, we took part in a Roman Workshop. We went around the hall and completed different activities based around items that were used in Roman Britain. These activities included making ink, clay pots, wax tablets, mosaics and a brooch. We also learnt how to fight as a Roman solider. In the afternoon, we were archaeologists and discovered some old Roman artefacts. We made a little museum to display these artefacts.

In Literacy, we have been looking at the book 'the secrets of black rock'. In this book, the main character, Erin, falls overboard. We worked in pairs to recreate the moment and thought carefully about what Erin might have been thinking as she landed in the water. In Art, we have been developing our drawing skills. This week we have focused on the skill of shading. We followed the 4 golden rules to shade in a picture successfully.

Over the past 2 weeks, Year 3 have been very busy. We worked hard in DT to plan, make and taste rock cakes. They were delicious! We have also successfully completed creating our pneumatic toys. We ended this week by singing beautifully at the church and enjoying a trip to the pantomime to see Dick Whittington and his cat.

In DT, Year 3 have been making pneumatic mechanisms for their toys this week. We had to carefully pierce a hole in the box and then problem solve how to get our balloon securely onto the tube so that no air would escape. We loved watching the balloon inflate and move the lid. We can't wait to decorate them and let them come to life.

In maths, we have been working really hard on solving division and multiplication problems. We used practical resources to show and explain our answers.

Over the last 2 weeks in Year 3, we have been looking at our 3s, 4s, and 8 times tables. We have been able to use these facts to help us solve division problems. We also had a special visit from the author and illustrator Martin Impey, who showed us some of his books, including The Christmas Truce. We created artwork inspired by his beautiful illustrations in the book.

Year 3 travelled back to the Stone Age when we visited Celtic Harmony. We watched how people would start their fires, catch their food using spears, make their tools and collect food from the environment around them. We finally worked together to build dens using branches and leaves. In our art lessons, we have been learning how to create Stone Age art which would have been painted in caves. We worked collaboratively to create our very own class cave with Stone Age pictures.

This week in Year 3, we have been investigating and identifying different types of soil in Science. In art, we have been exploring natural paints and used these to create pictures of animals that would have been painted on the cave walls during the Stone Age. We had fun creating different 'I can hear with my little ear' poems during National Poetry Day.

We have all been super busy and have worked extremely hard during our first 2 weeks in Year 3! Last week, we had the author James Mayhew visit us as we have been reading and completing some activities based off of his books. He told us a told and illustrated it at the same time, he even painted the picture while we were listening! This week, we have started our Stone Age topic by looking at and annotating different Stone Age pictures. We also used our science knowledge to identify different types of rocks by looking at their properties.

Year 3 really enjoyed learning about the artist Ken Done during our Arts Day. We learnt all about the artist, recreated some of his famous paintings and responded to his artwork. We then used different materials to create our own fish based on Ken Done's artwork and stuck them onto a big underwater canvas.

This week in Year 3, we have been investigating how water travels through a plant. We planned and set up an experiment which we will continue to observe over the next week. We can't wait to share our findings with you! During literacy, we have been looking at our new book 'The Wolves in the walls' and pretended to be scared, just like the main character Lucy. We brought in our teddies from home to comfort us and make us think how we would feel and react if we were her.

Year 3 have been busy this week designing and creating a cushion. They thought carefully about the different sewing techniques they wanted to use while designing. When creating their cushions, the children could apply their sewing skills from last year and develop the skill of cross stitch and applique. All the cushions are fantastic, and the children can't wait to bring them home!

Year 3 have been really busy this week designing, making and tasting their very own pizza. The children worked safely when using the knives to cut their toppings and grated the cheese carefully. This week in Literacy, we have started our new text type, which is newspaper reports. We have linked our knowledge of volcanoes from geography in order to begin to write a report based on the volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Pompeii. We enjoyed spending one of the lessons reading different newspaper reports and identifying the different features. We ended the week by designing and making a cake for Comic Relief. We thought carefully about the design and worked together as a class to 'ice' and decorate our fake cake.

Year 3 have been working hard to build their Roman houses over the past few weeks. They have had to make different 3D shapes, link them together to form their house shape and have started to add in key features and decorations. Pear and Cherry class have also worked collaboratively to design a garden of dreams. Each member of the group had to share what they wanted within the garden and together plan out where everything would go.

We have been identifying different types of rocks and testing their properties during our Science lessons over the past few weeks. Within our literacy lessons we have looked at the book 'The secret of Blackrock'. In the book, the main character, Erin, falls overboard and discovers what the secret of Blackrock is. We had lots of fun acting how Erin would have felt when she fell.

Year 3 have been busy showcasing our learning about a particular author and book to our parents over the last few weeks. Cherry Class shared their special talents and creative jam flavours which were inspired by the main character of Chrissie Sains's book 'An Alien in the Jam Factory'. Pear class sang one of Tom Fletcher's songs from his book 'The Creakers' and also presented some predictions on what would happen next. Year 3 have also been great geographers during our local walk, where we had to find human and physical features. They have also enjoyed music lessons this half-term and have been singing enthusiastically and adding in actions too.

It has been a very busy week in Year 3! We started the week by reflecting on the importance of Remembrance Day and we each created our own poppy. This week we have been learning about 'The most famous women in NASA': Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson. Within Literacy, we learnt all about Katherine Johnson and wrote a biography about her life and achievements. We also drew and painted a portrait of her. We created a fact file about Dorothy Vaughan and a piece of artwork by Mary Jackson.

In History, Year 3 have been learning all about the mysteries of Stonehenge. There are lots of reasons that archaeologists think it might have been built, such as: a healing place or an ancient calendar. Why not ask us what we think it was used for. We even built our own replicas of Stonehenge out of items found around the classroom.

This half term, Year 3 have been busy putting their textile skills to practice. They have learnt to sew a running stitch, cross and back stitch. They even learnt a new life skill by sewing on a button. They then put their skills to good use by making cushions! We are blown away by their determination and resilience. What a wonderful way to finish up the Summer term.

What a fantastic first few weeks back we have had in Year 3! We have been busy working on our sentence structures in Literacy, ensuring we are using the correct punctuation and conjunctions where appropriate. We have continued to delve into our Book Talk Books and exploring them through different Reading Rainbow lenses. As always, we LOVE visiting the library and one lucky child found a golden ticket! Hooray for new books!

To finish up a short but busy term, Year 3 took part in Science Day! They were challenged with the enquiry question ; which material holds bubbles best? Children had great fun exploring the different materials and bubbles. To finish off our geography topic, the children used plasticine to recreate the different layers of the world. The children showed a fantastic understanding of how the earth is structured. They were also paid a visit by some chicks. Year 3 were very gentle and caring with them! Happy Easter from Year 3.

Year three have been cooking this week! We became professional pizza chefs for the morning and met some objectives in our DT lessons. The aim was to be able to cut, spread, grate and roll ingredients. Delicious!

This week, we have jumped straight back into our learning. We kicked started the week with a DT project. The children used 2D and 3D shapes to create a Roman Town House. We loved getting stuck into a project that links with our previous History Topic of 'Ruthless Romans'.

We have kicked started this half term by starting our new topic 'Rocks and Soils'. We used our observation and classifying skills to group and compare rocks. We thoroughly enjoyed feeling the different textures and taking in natural beauty. Year 3, then had a go at completing some observational drawings of what they discovered and could see. For our Stone Age topic, Year Three stepped into the life of a 'hunter gatherer' in this week's lesson. We discussed that in Stone Age times, there was an undeniable need to survive. We set off into the wilderness (the school field) to gather items that we deemed necessary and crucial to survive. It was difficult to decide which items would have benefitted us during this time period and which were deemed unnecessary.

This week Year 3 showcased their fantastic teamwork whilst taking part in sports day. Everyone took part in a range of sporting activities such as penalty shoot-out, Quidditch, relay races and obstacle course. Every member of Pear and Cherry showed resilience, a great sense of teamwork and determination to do their best for their team! Once the races were over, everyone enjoyed a sharing lunch with their adult's. Thank you to all those that made it to cheer the children on. At Roebuck, we work as a team!

Year Three have been writing spooky suspense stories in their Literacy week. Our story has begun with something hiding inside the walls. To get into the mindset of a scary story, our experience day allowed us to feel the emotions of our character, Lucy, in the story. We noticed our heart rates raised and pulsed significantly when being scared.

Wow, what a busy start to the Summer term. This week we have delved into our new topics of Rocks, Tudors and our new Literacy writing of a Twisted Tale. This week, Year 3 have been developing their musical talents. We rocked out and sang 'Don't stop believing'. Then we added in the additional challenge of playing the glockenspiels focusing on the notes F G A. Later on in the week, we had the opportunity to take part in a musical workshop with students from the University of Hertfordshire. We learnt songs about the different continents of the world. We enjoyed learning new songs and putting a sequence of dance moves together and then sharing this within a whole school performance.

This week in PSHE Year 3 have been working on their communication, team work and collaboration skills. They were given the task to create a garden for someone who truly needs it. Ruthless Romans in Year 3

Year Three were fortunate enough to step into the times of the Ruthless Romans last week. We enjoyed an immersive day of learning about Roman battle armour where we even got to try some on and handle it up close. Then, we planned, designed and decorated traditional shields inspired by Roman mosaics and patterns. In the afternoon, we tasted Roman food such as: olives, cheese, grapes and bread (peacock brains were not on the menu unfortunately). As well this, we experienced what it was like to create the ‘tortoise’ formation in the battlefield, our team work and sticking together protected us well from flying objects and battle opponents.
