In Year Five we have had a very busy but fun week. For example, we have been focusing in Science on how day and night works, so we had a basketball with blue tack and a Lego figure and stuck the figure where you thought England was. Then we had to spin the basketball around our partner and walk around them. This showed the Earth orbiting and rotating around the sun. Also In Science we learnt how the sun makes shadows. We also used a pole and we marked the shadow every hour to see how it had changed. In computing we have made our own video game using 2DIY3D.

We have also had a lot of assessments this week including 3x maths and one comprehension. We have had a bit of a school trip this week as well because we went to Longmeadow Church. We were learning about the Easter story, we got to plant our own sunflowers and we got to fill out a booklet. We also had the choice to wash our feet or wash our hands if we wanted to. This showed how kind Jesus was because he washed his disciples’ feet.

They taught us what to do in an emergency (DR.ABCD) - Danger, Response, Airways, Breathing, Compressions/CPR, Defibrillator. We used dummies to practise on and were shown how to get our partners into the recovery position.

In Literacy we have been writing a narrative based on a video titled One Small Step. As part of an experience day, we made origami rockets, which was really tricky to do! It helped us to understand what Luna felt like when she was experiencing failure in the story. Also this week we celebrated World Book Day where we dressed up as our favourite book characters, read with the Reception children, had a World Book Day themed quiz and made a creative origami bookmark.

In Year 5, we have had some visitors in school this week. Ally from Usborne Books welcomed us into Buccaneers to explore her books. We have also had a rap workshop. First, we had to say our names and something about us. For example - I have a brother or sister. Then, we had to make a rap with words that we came up with which Andrew supported us with.

We had fun in the Boxercise session this week doing different exercises. In Music, we have been carrying on with our Grime tracks but adding in some audio. The final result was very successful.

In Science, we conducted an experiment to find out how much gas was produced as part of the non-reversible reaction between a vitamin C tablet and water. We had to use film canisters and put a quarter of a vitamin tablet in it with water. When we turned them upside down, the film canister shot up like a rocket because of the chemical reaction that took place. Next, we tried half a tablet, then three quarters and finally a whole vitamin tablet. Some of them went higher than the roof! It was definitely one of the best science lessons we have had.

In Art, we have been doing our final portrait designs using oil pastels, pens and a picture of ourselves. We had to use all our ideas to make a multi-media creative self-portrait.

To finish the week, we had an online workshop about AI. We then worked as a group to create a poster about how to use AI safely.

We have been creating our own drum beat and bass line to make our own track. In art, we have been researching information about an artist called Chila Kumari Singh Burman. In particular, we used her work to inspire us to be creative with our own portraits using oil pastels. In Science, we have been looking at dissolving salt/sugar in water and trying to separate contaminated water which had mud, leaves, twigs and glitter to see if we could use filters to remove different parts of the mixture. During literacy, we have started our new writing unit based on the text Varmints. We generated our own vocabulary for the paradise at the start of the book.

We did exercises and drills through the hall, played Connect 4 using cones and used the gloves and pads. As well as boxing, we have also had Andy from Savage Martial Arts teach us, Martial Arts! We learnt how to jab, cross and hook. He told us about the importance of listening to the sensei (teacher). We played a game to test our listening called ‘Here, There and Everywhere’. This involved listening to instructions rather than following where he pointed.

In Science, we started our new unit about Materials. We first had to sort different materials that had been mixed up by making a sieve to separate the items from each other. In our second lesson, we investigated which of the solids dissolved in water using some everyday objects: salt, sugar, bicarbonate soda, and sand.

In Art, we have been learning about portraits. We have been creating our own portraits of ourselves using poems as outlines.

This week we walked to St Peter's Church for our Christmas Celebration and sung a new song called Love Shone Down. We listened to Reverend Kate retell the Christmas story. On Thursday, the whole of Key Stage 2 visited the Gordon Craig theatre to watch Dick Whittington for this year's pantomime. In class we have been planning to write our own diary entry based on a BBC documentary about emperor penguins. We are writing from the point of view of one of the camera crew. In French we have been learning how to say what different pets we have. In art we have designed a monument all about ourselves. We have thought about clues to our likes and combined them into one design. Lastly, in science, we have been thinking about alternative uses for everyday objects: paper cups, ruler, books. We have then considered how we would advertise our items with their different uses.

We took out the parachute and made a big tent. While we were inside, we spoke about what it would have been like for Captain Scott and his men. We also spoke about how they may have passed the time. During Science this week, we did an experiment testing how fast different liquids travelled down a piece of cardboard. Different liquids moved at different speeds. Some were really slow like paint and PVA glue. In art we have been looking at the work of Fredreich Hundertwasser. We created some patterns inspired by his love of wavey lines and natural shapes.

We started the new half-term with an author visit from Martin Impey. We learnt that Martin Impey has illustrated nearly 60 books. One of his most famous books is called The Blitz: One Family’s War, which has won several awards. In Literacy, we have been learning about the book the Explorer by Katherine Rundell so for our first day we all went outside to gather leaves and draw things outside then we had to describe them using our senses. We also made a raft out of sticks that we found outside. During guided reading this week, we created a remembrance poem titled ‘I Can Bring Peace by…’ We then typed up our poem and repeated the poem to fill our page. Finally, we used corks to create a poppy print over the top. In PE, Mr K taught us how to play archery. We first started off in teams, and we had to try to hit the board or the bullseye. Then we went against Mr K. He obviously won, but we did have a few people get higher than him.

We are starting to plan our own independent writing based on the ending of the book. The character has pressed a button in the car which can transform it into another vehicle. We have thought about what our vehicle could be, where it could go and a big event that we could encounter. Also this week, we were visited by Carol Lilley who came to speak to our classes about body image and self-esteem. We drew ourselves as superheroes and gave ourselves unique super powers. In our Mini Police workshop this week we learnt about Online Safety and how to keep ourselves safe. We have also been hard at work cutting wood for our bridges. We have been using a tenon saw to cut wood to 100mm and we will be glueing them together to make a Truss Bridge.

Our teacher then writes the questions on the board that we might get stuck on to go through together. In literacy, we are focusing on Kick {our summer reading homework book }and learning about child labour. FACT: in some countries, children of 5yrs of age have to work! In maths, we are learning about place value and using grids to identify which digits are larger and smaller.

We started the year focusing on the book Katie and the Waterlily Pond by James Mayhew. In art, we have been drawing and painting waterlilies inspired by the book. In PE we have been running and training for the cross-country competition coming up for Year 5 and 6. In DT we have begun learning about bridges: Arch bridges, Beam bridges and Truss bridges. We even started to make our own Truss bridge out of spaghetti.

We used our observations of him to gather and develop vocabulary for our independent writing. We have enjoyed writing our own stories based on a short animation called The Present.

In Design Technology, we have been busy making our soft toys that we designed with our parents early in the term.

We also got the opportunity to visit the Three Horseshoes Bowls Club at Shephalbury Park. We have had a number of sessions at school run by experts from the club and it was great to actually get to play on a bowling green.

On Tuesday, we had our Master Chef day. We had to get into groups of six and plan and make a three-course meal. The starter had to include mushrooms, the main minced beef and the dessert pineapple. We split into three groups throughout the day. One group cooked, one found out about how we get pineapples from field to fork and the other found out about beef. It was such a fun day and everyone enjoyed trying the food. In the afternoon, we made smoothies by riding a bike! We picked the fruit we wanted to include and then the pedalling powered the smoothie maker and mixed it to make the smoothie.

On Wednesday, we had Sports Day, and our favourite activity was the water slalom run, which was where you had to get a sponge, fill it with water and squeeze it into a bucket. Whilst we were doing this, the teachers squirted us with water guns. However, the teachers ended up getting wetter than some of us!

On Thursday, it was Science day and we had a Harry Potter themed day. We had to plan and carry out an experiment linked to a flying car! We used helium balloons to experiment and find out how many people the flying car could carry. We used our previous science knowledge to think about what was happening in the experiment. In the afternoon, we got to visit the Wonderdome which was an amazing experience. The presenter took us on a tour of the solar system.

We have noted down the positives and negatives and created a conscience alley to help him make up his mind.

Also, we have had coaches visit from the Three Horseshoe Bowls club, who have come in to teach us how to play Bowls. We spent the day doing a variety of different activities. During the first activity, we learnt about the night sky and heard stories about how the star constellations were named. Next, we got creative and made a model of the earth, sun and moon that allowed us to demonstrate how they rotate and orbit. We also had the opportunity to view the Mars Yard test area, where we saw the prototype rovers that Airbus engineers are testing as part of the ExoMars project. An area that was enjoyed by everyone was the Exploration Zone. Here we enjoyed using the AR sandbox, where you could make volcanoes erupt, using a robotic arm to build with boulders, gave each other electric shocks, as well as exploring lots of other fun scientific exhibits.

They had the challenge of making truss bridges with spaghetti. This was a task where they needed lots of perseverance and resilience to complete their finish product. Everyone worked well together and with the help of their grown ups they achieved their goal.

After this, we carefully measured, cut and sanded the individually pieces of wood for our bridges. It was tricky to cut the diagonals for the support beams. We then used a glue gun to put our structure together before strengthening each corner with card triangles. We are really pleased with our final products.

We have also been busy completing our games in Computing. We have managed to create games with multiple levels and have had fun playing each others.

We had a great lesson completing research about Highwaymen. We even found out that the famous Highwayman, Dick Turpin, escaped from the local Justices of the Peace through a secret passage at the Roebuck Inn in Stevenage. We have enjoyed getting outside for our experience days and writing similes and metaphors using nature in the school grounds. As we have been re-creating our own poems, we have been able to make good use of these.

We have been learning two songs with students from the University of Hertfordshire. Sycamore have learnt a song based on the Amazon rainforest and Juniper learnt one about the Grand Canyon. We are looking forward to performing these to the rest of Key Stage 2 on Friday.

In Science, we have continued to learning about space. This week we found out how the planets move in our solar system. We went outside to map out the orbits of each planet. This helped us to see how each planets orbit time would differ.

We were lucky enough to get a visit from the ducklings that have been in the Nursery for the last two weeks.

World Book Day was packed with different activities. We enjoyed trying to find out who was behind each book in the 'Masked Reader' quiz. Also, we had some great conversations about our favourite books and used this to create our own reading river.

We used magnets, sieves and tweezers to remove some of the items. We also discussed the use of dissolving to help to separate the salt that was in the mixture.

As part of National Story telling week, we enjoyed writing our own stories based on the book The Journey. It was great fun sharing these with year 2.

In Literacy, we have started a new unit based on non-chronological reports. We started off by looking at the layout and structure of the texts. Then, we enjoyed watching a documentary about emperor penguins. We found out lots of fascinating facts, and we are now using these to write our non-chronological reports.

We got a number of different liquids and ran them down pieces of cardboard and used our observational skills to decide which were the most and least viscous of them.

We got a bit messy but managed to do a great job and come up with a class ranking. In literacy, we have been doing some performance poetry. Looking at reading a poem fluently and to a beat, adding in some actions and adding some flair to the performance. We finished the week by putting the performance together to make our own video.

We then had a workshop with him and were taught how to draw a dragon. The results were amazing!

As part of our Mini Police session this week, Year 5 have impressed everyone with their phonetic alphabet knowledge. Most children could say their name using the language that the police use and some could recall the whole alphabet. We also investigated different types of bullying.

As part of Remembrance Day, we learnt about famous soldiers from World War I and II and found out facts about them. We then used these facts to create a memorial fact file poppy.

In science, we have planned and carried out an experiment to find out how the shape of a plasticine ball affected how quickly it fell through water. We found out that if it had a bigger surface area there was more water resistance acting on it and therefore it fell slower although some of our results were inconsistent.

This week we visited West Stow, an Anglo Saxon museum, to investigate how people in this era would have lived.

We got to handle and interrogate different objects that were found at the site and replicas of tools and equipment that they used. The cow jaw bone drew a lot of attention with some at first thinking it could have been a person. We then looked around the museum and looked at things such as swords, shields and clothes (we even got to try some of them on!)

After lunch we visited the village. We went round in groups looking at how they were built and what materials were used. We found out that sometimes up to 10 people would live in a house with only one room and one fire. At the end of the day we all gathered in the 'Great Hall' and our group leader gave us some extra background information on the site and we got an opportunity to ask her questions about what we had experienced.

We had a great day out and it was fun to actually see and experience how the Anglo-Saxons lived.

In Science, we have been busy finding out more about forces. We have been looking at the difference between mass and weight. We then carried out our own experiment where we used scales and newton meters to gather evidence and compare the measurements, to see if there was a link. We also had a fun lesson with bubbles. We were looking at what makes something move and the forces that act upon the object.

In art, we are focusing on portraits. We used a printed image of ourselves and used it to draw a continuous line drawing portrait.

Year 5 have made a great start to the year. We are really enjoying our summer reading book Kick and we are now finding out more about child labour and making clothes ethically. This week we have started writing a persuasive letter to a famous footballer, John Stones, asking him to make certain his sponsored kit is manufactured in a Child Labour Free Zone.

In science, we have started our unit on forces by looking at how different forces may act on objects. We carried out a number of experiments and found some interesting results. One of our favourites was a bottle filled with rice. We inserted a pencil into the bottle and had to push it in and out of the rice continually. Eventually, we were able to hold the bottle with just the pencil. We think this happened because the little pockets of air between the rice started to reduce as the pencil was pushed in and out. As the grains of rice got pushed closer together, there was a lot less air between them. The grains were also rubbing against each other and friction allowed the pencil to get ‘stuck’ in the rice.

Year 5 dived straight into their history topic this half-term with a trip to the British School Museum in Hitchin. We began our day learning about the great hall and how many children would have been taught by just one teacher, 800 children to only 1 teacher in the early days. We then explored the old headmaster's house and spent time in each room discussing how life would have been different in those times for the people living there – including the lack of electricity, heating and running water! We looked at the creative ways they kept the bed warm, washed and dried their laundry and discussed what the pots were used for under the bed! We discussed the difference in the lives of the poor and rich and how life would have differed for boys and girls. Later we were transported back in time and took part in a Victorian style lesson learning the 3 R’s (reading, writing & arithmetic). The children completed their work using slate and pencil and then tried out the ink - dipping their pens in the pot on the table. Some of our left-handed children even tried writing with their right hand as they were told, 'The right hand is the right hand to write with!'. To make the experience as authentic as possible, a child was selected to wear the dunces caps and we even had one caning (well, a very good actress that made it seem believable anyway!). We finished our day with a PE lesson – drills in the yard – and then played with Victorian toys. All in all a fantastic day filled with memorable experiences and crammed full of learning.

We looked at questions such as; which shape is the strongest for a bridge? What materials would make the best bridge? We looked at arch, beam and truss bridges. We practised the method of creating a truss bridge using spaghetti and masking tape which created quite a lot of mess
and was a good challenge. We all agreed after that a bridge of spaghetti was not the best choice as it isn’t a suitable material for the purpose of a bridge.
Over the last 2 days of term we have been using a number of skills and different pieces of equipment to build our very own truss bridges. We sawed our pieces of wood into the correct
length and angles. We used glue guns to put all of our pieces together to create our final products which we will then evaluate at the start of next term.

As you can see, we had a lot of fun using different pieces of equipment to sort out the mess left by the adults.

We have also planned our writing of a non-chronological report about an animal that lives in an extreme habitat. We used Chromebook’s to research an animal of choice and collected as many facts as we could! We will start writing these up next week and can’t wait to see and share the final pieces of work.

In science, we have been investigating materials and the differences between the particles of solids, liquids and gasses. As you can see in the pictures, it was a tight fit for some! (pictures for this will follow) After looking at this we sorted a number of different things into each of the 3 states. Do you think cream is a solid or a liquid?

In maths, we have started our new topic focused on reading and understanding timetables and graphs. We have got off to a great start in this topic, working well in groups and pairs to find answers and investigate the line graphs.

Additionally, they have worked hard to plan and write their own narrative sequel, in English, for a story called Computer Dad. Year 5 have also been continuing to explore North America, where they have established the names of the countries within it along with facts about their capital cities. Ask your child, “Can you name me a county in North America and its capital city?”

Furthermore, they also became scientists and investigated the all-important question of “Which biscuit brand makes the best dunker?”. During this investigation, the children compared various qualities of each biscuit before formulating an opinion of what will make the most ideal dunker. They then carried out a fair test to make their final conclusion. Which biscuit brand is your favourite dunker?

I only have a few lines to cram in all the wonderful learning we have achieved so far. We started off our Viking topic with some cooking, making Viking Stew (known as 'Krause') and Viking bread. They all performed wonderfully well and created some tasty food! Mr Alden gave it a five-star rating! Whilst one class were cooking, the other class were trying to sell cars to each other as part of our 'Experience Day' for Literacy. Mr Downie's car got sold for £1.5 million, so he is skipping happily to the bank on Monday!

PE and Music have been going really well, as we have been restarting our Cornets learning, as well as starting a new topic of Gymnastics. We have even explored using apparatus and the wall bars! The adults in Year 5 have been really pleased with the start the children have made...now we have to keep it up!

In Year 5, we have been using our place value knowledge to multiply and divide by tens, hundreds and thousands. In Literacy, we finished writing our Black History biographies about Walter Tull and have been rehearsing, in groups, a poem called 'Boneyard Rap', ready to perform it. We also concluded our topic about the Anglo-Saxons and used our learning to create a timeline all about the era.

In addition to this, we have completed a whole half-term of Handball (celebrating with a mini tournament at the end), and even built our own Parachutes in science to test air resistance and gravity!

What a wonderful half-term we've had in Year 5. Well done!
