On Thursday 9th June 2022, Roebuck Academy students from Year 4,5 and 6 attending the much-anticipated Athletics Competition at Ridlins Athletics Track. Roebuck was amongst 16 other schools across the partnership, competing in both track and field events throughout the entire day. The day started with a large parade around the track, where schools got the opportunity to represent their commonwealth country which SSFT had given them at the start of the year, with Roebuck's being Scotland. Following the parade and warm-up, the busy day began with children from all year groups heading off in different directions to take part in either their field, or track event. All field events and the long-distance events were straight finals, with all other track events ran in heats to determine the finalists for the afternoon session. After a morning of long jumps, high jumps, cricket ball throws, javelins, sprint races, long distance races and relay races the finalists had been revealed for the afternoon session. Roebuck Academy making it to the final of all races bar one, so another busy afternoon ahead! On completion of all the final races and following the impressive display in the teacher relay race from Mr Moran and Mr Steedman who picked up the Silver Medals, it was time to announce the individual results, then the overall results.

Today, we had an inspiring dreamcatcher from Chris Bull, who was originally from Kent until he was 17 then decided to move. He went to an all-boys school and dreamt of being a generalist or a story writer. He came in and spoke to us about how to keep healthy and stay fit. He talked to us about his business (which is called Fit Kids). In his business he goes to schools, and he brings equipment to teach children how to use them properly. During his time at schools, he teaches children how to stay fit! He has been to 22 primary schools in Stevenage and only has 7 left to go to. When Chris came to Roebuck Academy, he showed us exercises we can do without any equipment (exercises like jumping jacks, star jumps and high knees). When he was demonstrating these workouts, he chose students to come up and have a go. The experience he needed to get into the fitness business was an intense 5-week course.

Before he left, he gave all the children a golden nugget to step forward in life, “Enjoy life, as you have only one chance to live.”

He also works closely with our school. He explained to us that being a Head Teacher is not just about sitting around in a dull office doing nothing, he told us that all his days are different and exciting. For example, he and students have been on a number of trips to different areas in different countries- Russia, France/Paris and Greece.

Mr Lewis was born in Stevenage, but grew up in Biggleswade, as a child. When Mr Lewis was a child he went to Lodge Farm Primary school and Highfield secondary school. Also, when he was younger he wanted to be a history teacher and journalist. As he wanted to be a history teacher he had to study all subjects at school. He told us that he loves his job and couldn’t ask for a better one.

He left the children with a nugget of wisdom which was,‘Have a go at everything and be courageous’.

Key Stage 2 classes experienced a Piano Trio last week in school. The children from Upper and Lower Key Stage 2 enjoyed listening to a variety of classical pieces of music from composers who were still alive. The Lawson Trio performed a variety of songs to the children, highlighting the different instruments that were on show: the piano, violin and double bass. The musicians worked hard to engage the children and teach them about each instrument as well as lots of key vocabulary. They encouraged the children to create stories in their mind from the pieces and discuss how it made them feel and what parts of the music made them feel this way.

Today we had a Dream catcher assembly and a lady came in named Pam Pellen. She is a creative producer and a drama practitioner, who was born in South East London. When she was younger she liked to climb trees, read and write stories and play let's pretend. She also wanted to be a cowboy or an Olympic swimmer because people who did this had inspired her to do it too. However, her love for drama changed that. When she moved on to secondary school there was no drama for her to participate in except school plays (she went to an all-girls school). Since her love of drama grew she decided to become a drama teacher when she grew up. When she taught drama she was very upset that boys didn't want to participate in drama. At one point in her teaching industry she was going to give up teaching drama. However, with the help of all the staff that worked with her motivated her to keep on going. A quote from her father was ‘keep on going and others will follow’. She stated that reading helped her when growing up.

Her nugget of inspiration to the children in school was ‘Get reading and keep on reading’- Pam Pellen

All monies raised will be sent to Young Minds to help support their invaluable service to young children.
Having someone to talk your worries through with is a great way to ensure you keep anxiety at bay. The Roebuck Academy Dream team visited every class this morning to spread the message that it is good to talk. They delivered drinks and biscuits so the children could have a break and a chat on Wear Yellow Day. At Roebuck Academy we are caring.
The children have worked really hard over the last few weeks, and especially this week with all the events that were happening. Children who hadn't previously had main parts took on roles at very short notice. The children were really excited to perform their production to the rest of the school. We have recorded the production for those who were not able to come in to school. Pease feel free to click on the links below for the production of Who's the mummy?

All classes dressed up as their favourite Rock Star and spent the day solving maths problems based on a pack of smarties. Activities included measuring how tall you are using packs of smarties, estimating how many smarties were in each pack, creating graphs and charts of the different colours of smarties in each pack, working out ratios of different coloured smarties and calculating fractions of different coloured smarties.

At the end of the day the children were then allowed to take their pack home , or eat them!

On Thursday 6th February we were visited by Alison Joy who is an Orthoptist.

Alison loves her job because she gets to help new people every day. She helps children and adults of all ages. Every day is different and she sees 10-30 people depending if the day is busy or not. She has had glasses since she was very young, works at Lister Hospital and has been for filling her dream of helping people for 20 years.

When she was younger, she wanted to help people by being a teacher or doctor. Alison lived in North Yorkshire as a child and went to a primary school there as well. She went to university for 4 years and did A- levels in maths and chemistry.

Alison wore glasses since the age of seven and helps people who need glasses from ages 1-100. Although she mainly helps children, Alison has no typical working day. One of the reasons people come to her is because of something called Cataracts. It is where older people see a dot in the middle of their vision.

Alison’s golden nugget of wisdom for all the children of Roebuck was, “Get your eyes checked regularly, listen all the time and do something every day to help somebody!”

On Thursday 13th February, we were visited by Alison Leavy.

Alison is a Bio-chemist and works at company called Life Ark. She has been working there for 40 years and loves her job and science. She trained as a Bio-chemist however, she mostly works with cells. Alison has lived in many countries and has helped many different people.

Alison went to a primary school in South London, Croydon. After spending 3 years at university and finishing a degree, she left at the age of 18. Although she didn’t have a dream at school, Alison thought about what she could actually do. To do her job, she had to be good at maths, science, problem solving skills and perseverance.

At 8 o’clock every morning, Alison heads to her lab. To enter the lab, you have to wear a white cloak, special glasses and white latex gloves. She meets new people most days and makes their good ideas work. Alison conducts many experiments which could each take from one hour to six months. There is also a glass wall so people can look inside the lab without being to close. Now they have robots in the laboratory, and in the afternoons, Alison works in an office of computers.

Her nugget of wisdom was, “The most important thing is to try everything, take all of your opportunities and never give up!”

Playing against some well drilled sides, the children quickly adapted to the rules of the competition and worked really well in their teams to master the tactics of the game. Despite winning a couple of matches each the teams played each other for the minor positions in the competition, but nevertheless performed with great commitment and determination as well as excellent teamwork. Well done to all.

Helen lives in East London and loves designing fashion. She is a STEM school project administrator but in the past she has had many exciting jobs.

In year 12, she studied business on a type writer and short-hand handwriting but soon decided that this wasn’t what she wanted to do. Then she studied being a secretary. When she went to college, she studied a four year degree in art as designing dresses would require her to be good at drawing. In her third year, she worked for a fashion designer called Helen Storey who had her own design shop. There she was encouraged to share her ideas and create.

They did a project on Dvora cloths and printed a dress with cement (which stayed in a glass container outside for two weeks and cleaned the air inside it). Finally she finished her degree and worked in many bridal wear shops since. Then for a while, she had her own bridal shop.

Her nugget of wisdom was, “Remember that your education is always important. Everything you learn is important to remember as it will help you make decisions about what you do and don’t want to do later on in life.”

Roy goes around to schools reading stories to children and making them smile. He lives in Hertfordshire with four sons and a wife and he came to our school to read the Donkey’s First Christmas written by an eleven year old girl. This book was about Mary, Jesus and Bethlehem but from the donkey’s point of view. This book was very entertaining and humorous and we would love to have him come back to Roebuck Academy and read more stories.

Being a storyteller wasn’t his only dream as a little boy. Roy wanted to be a teacher growing up so he studied singing, dancing and script writing which he enjoyed and he now has a passion for storytelling.

Roy’s nugget of wisdom for our children was enjoy your school, enjoy books, and enjoy life.

Owen is a musician and has been all around the world. Just recently, he came back from a cruise in Australia singing for all the people on board. He was due to go to Denmark the following weekend and then Los Angeles before Christmas for another cruise. He is very, very busy!

Owen told us that he always wanted to be a football reporter/ analyst when he was younger as he enjoyed football but didn't feel he was that good at playing it. When he was older, in his late teens,he taught himself to play guitar by watching You Tube videos. Because he loved playing so much, he played all of the time and quickly became very good at it.

Over the years, he has played at many gigs locally and he has visited over 60 countries. He has also been a music teacher. Owen sang us a song called Shot Gun which everybody enjoyed singing along to.

Owen told us that we should pursue what we like doing as in his case, his hobby has turned into his job which he absolutely loves doing every single day. We are all hoping that Owen comes back and visits us again soon as we really enjoyed his assembly!

On Thursday 21st November, we were joined by two ladies called Vanessa and Tina.

Vanessa works at a charity called Vision Loss and this charity has been in Hertfordshire for over 100 years. Tina is being supported by this charity. They visited our school to tell us more about their charity and to give us an idea of what it might be like to work for one.

Unfortunately, Tina lost her eyesight quite a while ago when she had a child who was only one. Luckily, this charity helped her to get through life while being blind. Tina described what happened and how she felt. “I was just scared because I couldn’t see and I didn’t know how to look after my child while being blind.” Throughout these years, Tina has got a lot of help with home life activities and situations.

We were all very inspired by the assembly. We were moved by what a fantastic job the charity and its workers such as Vanessa do to help people and by Tina, who is an inspiration to us and who was so brave to come in and talk to us all about her daily struggles.
